Land of shadows

The Maori who first inhabited New Zealand would often refer to Fiordland as ‘Ata Whenua’ which can be interpreted as ‘land of shadows’. On the day I shot this, remnants of a tropical cyclone made impact on the west coast, bringing with it tempestuous wind and rain. I headed to Milford and boarded a boat to get right amongst the elements. Looking at this photo, I remember being tossed around the deck by the rising swell and rain being blown inside my ears. Toward the left, what looks like cloud is actually a waterfall being thrown into the sky.
