Night Lights
A beautiful evening beneath the moonlight as the aurora blazed its light into the sky. Beside the lake, waves and wind combined with the dim light to make a sublime and moving experience.

Glory Above
A special and historic evening in May 2024, when earth experienced intense aurora activity from a large geomagnetic storm. The lights pulsed, danced and splashed colour for many hours, covering the entirety of the sky. We were incredibly fortunate to have clear skies and no wind when I was running a photography workshop at the time. I was so thankful to be in my home of Fiordland when this event took place, meaning I was able to witness the lights shine over mountains, rivers and valleys that I’m so familiar with. I know most of the images from this night I won’t ever be able to create again. It was a truly humbling and special night for all who got to experience it across the world.

This view is looking north, where a strong pink beam consistently lit the sky, stretching across the heavens like a bow of light.

Fall From heaven
I’m very fortunate to have watched the northern and southern lights dozens of times but nothing was quite like this historic evening in May 2024, when the sky erupted in some of the most vibrant and luminous aurora in recent history. The composition in this image is not what I would normally opt for, however this frame is all about the glory of the sky and this absolutely phenomenal moment when the aurora stretched overhead in an intense ‘corona’ display, leaving me literally speechless and in awe. The colour was unlike anything I’d witnessed before.

Valley Of Valleys
An icon valley view on the way to Milford Sound, which I must have past and admired hundreds of times now. On this particular morning though, I was in awe and compelled to capture the beauty before me. Light and atmosphere is everything.

Mountains Of Majesty
I’ve done a lot of scouting and exploring over the years but this place just about takes the prize for being one of the most serene environments I’ve laid eyes on. A pure mountain paradise. Winter is calling me though.

Mercy
The setting sun filtering through the lush forest canopy. Shortly after I just had to put the camera down and simply sit, look and listen to what I was privileged to witness, on many occasions. I’m truly thankful for this.

Right Here
I spent five hours hiking, sliding, slipping, crawling and exploring a gorge in the mountains, with not a single frame worth sharing. After walking out of the valley, not far from my vehicle, this scene really unfolded and spoke to me, becoming a personal favourite. This is the part of photography that keeps things fun and inspiring, you never really know what you’ll see and ultimately draw inspiration from. Time in nature usually provides many benefits, one way or another.

Quiet Beauty
I really love these crips autumn days, when the light gets softer, the days are shorter and the air is fresh. The waters were calm on the lake, as I admired the light dancing across the face of the mountains. You can see the making of this on my Youtube channel.

Fragments
An isolated shoreline which runs alongside crumbling cliffs and lush rainforest. These large sea stacks stand like an ancient ruined city, creating a sense of mystery which easily provides inspiration. Although this sunset had some nice colour, I felt the natural contrasts and gradients best suited a monochrome rendering. The South Island is truly a land of contrasts.

For Now
I found this composition and view almost 2 years prior to creating this image. I’ve had numerous attempts at capturing the scene but never felt like I had done it justice. I still don’t but for now, I’m happy enough with this result to share this one. Sometimes photography is like that, especially with areas that you can return too. I enjoy the challenge.

Emerald Fall
This waterfall is unnamed. It’s one of thousands which are hidden from view, tucked away in mountainous valleys, gorges and dense forests. After boating and then hiking into dark confines of Fiordland, I’m confident very few, if any at all have even stood here. This is the most enjoyable part of photography for me, the exploration and surprises that await. It doesn’t always work out but when it does, it’s hard to beat. Green is my favourite colour and the water here had such a beautiful shade to it. Emerald Fall seems like a fitting title.
