Revere
The grand magnificence of the rugged Fiordland mountains and fiords. It stirs something within that can’t really be put into words. My images are an attempt at expressing what is seen and felt.

Higher Level Of Majesty
I really look forward to the first snow of the season, which often falls in autumn. It never fails to leave an impression, after months of viewing the bare peaks, a fresh coating of snow completely transforms the scene and elevates it to an even higher level majesty.

Paint
Photography is all about being an observer. Sometimes it’s the finer details which stir inspiration, often in conjunction with the right light. The shimmer of the painterly water here really caught my eye.

Time Stands Still
Late one summers afternoon, we decided a night outdoors was in order, so along with my wife and two young children we packed some gear and walked up this ridge. Surprisingly, the rare sound of frogs croaking kept me awake most of the night, but thankfully the views made up for the lack of sleep. There are certain ingredients which I feel make for a great black and white photograph, with this scene possessing many of the qualities. You can check out the whole adventure on my Youtube channel here.

A Quiet Voice
A large portion of my work involves spontaneity. Having no forced ideas or motives, but instead approaching nature with a willingness to pause, look and listen. I much prefer to work this way and I’ve often found myself losing track of time, completely immersed in the environment. It’s a deep connection that is formed and can’t really be replaced by anything else on earth.

Led By Light
One afternoon I found myself wandering amongst this forest, following the gentle light and where it cast its rays. Walking slowly across the soft mosses, it was easy to lose track of time in such a place.

Extinguish
It’s really hard to find the words to accompany these types of images in my portfolio. It’s truly one of the greatest sights to witnesses, as the numerous peaks and valleys are rendered in a progressive gradient and the light of the sun drips with saturation. The lowering temperatures cause low clouds to form, seemingly steaming from mountain summits. Every direction is a grand display of the creators glory. I am just a humble bystander.

Serene
Just me alone in this vast wilderness, as the sun sets over this great fiord one fine summers eve. This area is one of the windiest and wettest places in the world, so being able to absorb such a serene evening here was surely cherished. Of course, by midday the next day I was inside my tent completely engulfed in rain and cloud. You can view the making of this image over on my Youtube channel.

The Divide
A compelling moment, as an up-draught generated this continuous cloud which billowed in the warm sun like smoke. The cliff beside plummeted in a sheer vertical drop into the abyss, the sky was ablaze and the mountain landscape seemed to stand proud in this often imposing land.

Fantails
Fleeting light in the native forest, as two fantails (Piwakawaka) decided to flit and flutter all around me, eventually making their way into my frame. I was incredibly surprised and elated to experience such a moment and I’m always eager to incorporate wildlife into my landscape scenes when possible. You can see the behind the scenes shoot over on my Youtube.

Islands In The Sky
Cloud can often create two completely different worlds, separating darkness and light. On these mornings, the mountains reign supreme in the glorious light.

Thankful
This was a special morning, on a mountain saddle where I camped the previous night. The early summer sunrise was a gift that just kept on giving, decorating the clouds in various hues and bringing a luminous glow to the mountains. The great fiord of Dusky was below me, but I was also very fond of this small mountain tarn and view of Mount Hodges.

Light Fade
One of the greatest gifts that photography has provided me, is the abundant unexpected moments of beauty I’ve stumbled across when out in nature. A simple scene just like this, as the soft glow of sunset gently makes its way to the forest floor. A few seconds of simple beauty, in a complex world.

Summers Eve
As much as I love the dramatic and evocative mood Fiordland is notorious for, I still have a soft spot for these calm, crisp mornings and evenings which occasionally grace this wild land.

Cascade
One of an innumerable amount of waterfalls which weep from the mountains during a rainstorm in Milford. I like the way the droplets bounce and dance on their steep descent.

Steam
A fortress of rock separating the east and west, this chain of mountains in Fiordland is commonly covered in cloud and hammered by relentless winds. So after several attempts, this rare evening was greatly appreciated, as the sun began to set and the mountain summits began to steam in the light.

A Grand Awakening
Early one summers morning, I peered through my tent and was immediately awakened by the sight of this glorious sky. A short walk along the rivers edge, I was led to this meadow of spectacular beauty. You can see the whole video and process over on my Youtube channel.

Adorned
A late season snow storm absolutely transformed the entire landscape, high up in the mountains. The snow was like porcelain and light soft and gentle as it painted the snow laden clouds. You can see the whole adventure on my Youtube channel here.

One of the most spectacular, untouched areas of New Zealand. A mighty castle rises from the valley floor, towering into the warm evening sky.

Grand Revealing
I’d spent a few years envisioning this moment, the beauty of this remote fiord as the evening light warmed the landscape. This area holds a special place in my heart.

Snow Kea
Here we were, after a fresh fall of snow and the sun began to spread its rays. A rare and intimate moment, with the special creature that calls these mountains home. Please see my Youtube channel on how I captured this moment.

Luminance
The majestic beauty of the beech forest which aligns the mountainsides. Fresh snow had fallen and the morning light crept over the horizon, making for a pristine scene.

Fall With Me
A hidden waterfall tucked away beneath the mountains. I’d shared this location with friends when I created this image, as the gorgeous winter light crept into the canyon. Upon returning a month later, I discovered a landslide had caused trees to fall and the whole area is now quite destroyed. Nature gives and takes.
