Prehistoric
If there was ever a scene that represented beauty and peace, to me, this would be it. My whole life I’ve been drawn to the greens and fine complexities of rainforests. The gentle cascading of water, delicacy of water droplets hanging on ferns and the fresh smell of rain. As long as I can walk, I’ll explore these places. Very few human feet would have stood and explored this particular river in a far remote wilderness of Fiordland.

Porcelain
It’s a special sight to behold, seeing the lush rainforest and beech trees covered in fresh snow. The leaves of the silver beech aren’t much larger than your fingernail, so only a thin coat of snow can be held by these mossy creatures. The slightest increase in temperatures will soon see the snow disappear, usually before midday. It’s quite common for these old trees to fall down after decent snow fall, due to the shallow root system and frailty of the damp trunks.

The softest of light filters across a dream like landscape of swirling mist and looming mountains. Nearby, a river runs through a valley and water droplets filter through the lush canopy of trees. This is Fiordland.

Forest Secrets
The base of a towering waterfall, within the shadowy confines of a small canyon deep in the forest. I shared this particular afternoon with my son, where we enjoyed kayaking across the river and bashing through the scrub to reach this special, hidden place.

Hopeful
Many of the worlds beautiful places have been tainted by the hands of man. There are, however, innumerable areas of remaining wilderness where wondrous scenes like this are hidden and exude beauty without having ever been seen. This is what inspires me, knowing there’s so much of this to explore and experience with fresh eyes. After pushing through the thick scrub, hearing the roar of the water getting louder and louder, there’s nothing that will ever compare to that first glimpse.

Sky Dance
An incredible burst of the Aurora Australis, which danced across the sky until dawn. On occasion, the horizontal glow was pierced by strong vertical pillars which shot high up into the stars. This was the strongest of the beams pulses and such a glorious display of the Southern Lights which was enjoyed by many across New Zealand.
