Sound Of Silence
I’ve camped on this high vantage point a couple of times and it’s definitely one of my favourites parts of the world. Overlooking Doubtful Sound in the Fiordland National Park, there’s not much noise to be heard here, except the soft roar from the distant falls which would occasionally enter my ears as it travelled with the wind. The foreground plant is young mountain Neinei which adorns various sections of this slope. Technically a ‘fiord’ not a ‘sound’, a glacier would’ve once travelled where the sea water is here. A humbling reminder of how fleeting our time is here. But a mere breathe of wind.

Inner Flame
Over time, so much has happened to this land. Only 40 years ago, the glacier towered over and stretched beyond the place where I stood to capture this image. It’s a humbling reminder of our mortality and inevitable fate. Below the light of a new dawn, the clock continues to tick as I try my best to appreciate the present moment.

D'Archiac
True wilderness, in the heart of the Southern Alps, New Zealand. This cloud rolled in right on sunset, making for an incredible light show, with the sound of nearby Kea and the glacial river echoing up the valley.

Father and Son
I love everything contained in this image. Fresh snow, golden light, mist, towering peaks, river, trees and classic Fiordland atmosphere. I captured this not far from my home one afternoon accompanied by my son. I was very enthusiastic about the conditions so he too shared in the excitement with plenty of ‘look at that light!’ being said by us both.
Aardvark
There’s no name other images of this sea stack, so I’m calling it Aardvark Rock. It’s hard to gauge the scale here with the wide angle lens but this rock stands at least 20 metres tall, in fact I climbed up and easily stood inside the arch on the bottom right. Battered and scarred by the relentless seas off the coast of New Zealand, I can’t imagine what this remnant has witnessed and endured over the years.

Place Of The Wind
Spending most of my life on the coast, capturing waves has always been a favourite of mine. Living in New Zealand still provides that opportunity even away from the coasts, when strong winds stir up hefty waves on some of the glacial lakes.
Through the storm
A stretch of remote coast that myself and a friend have visited several times, exploring the numerous remnants that rise from these jagged shores. On this morning we headed directly into a deep storm that created some incredible light and also had as seeking emergency shelter within a nearby, cave if we were to be stranded. We were able to make it out but I wouldn’t have minded either way.

Winter Moon
For almost two years I’ve wanted to photograph this great peak in the Fiordland wilderness. After a few attempts, I was finally able to gaze upon its summit which was right in the core of a winter freeze, resulting in temperatures below -10 celsius. Topo maps can help with scouting but finding this icy stream with trees framing the peak was a pleasant surprise. Shortly after sunset, the full moon arose, bringing life and light upon the frozen landscape. In this day and age, it’s a real privilege to still be able to stand in places that very few ever have, if any at all.

Enchantment
Coursing down and through the foothills of the mountains, a myriad of creeks, cascades and streams intertwine and flow through lush forest. Vibrant shades of green adorn the ferns and beech trees, from the ground up.

Tempest
Eating dinner with my family, we watched this storm suddenly emerge from behind the nearby ranges. By the time I grabbed my gear and ran to the car, the light and atmosphere had eerily shifted, as the wind picked up and thunder began to echo around the valley walls. Setting up by these lupin and gazing up at this cloud, I began to question my decision to be outdoors, so exposed to the violence that was about to ensue. I soon ran back to shelter as hail, lightning and strong winds made their way on shore. I was filled with mixed emotions of joy and fear and could do nothing but laugh at the power of such an event, something that really reminded me how futile we humans are. In the morning all the lupin in this location we obliterated, lying sideways and scattered in every direction.

Lost and found
Exploring new and remote locations is just as rewarding and exciting to me as the art of creating photos. When I am able to look at something for the first time, without any pre-conceived ideas, inspiration flows and the creative process is undisturbed. This was the case when I spent some time along this isolated coast with mates, seeking out photographic opportunities amongst miles of caves, arches and jagged sea stacks. It’s hard not to feel alive in these moments, knowing that where we stood, very few have.

Forgotten Ones
This remote stretch of coast is a fusion of the best seascape locations I’ve ever explored, where lush forests descend to greet a vast expanse of caves, jagged stacks and spires along endless shores. The hand of man is far removed from these parts, with a timeless presence felt when amidst these ancient giants. Upon our final visit here in an attempt to capture some atmosphere and light, a storm had cleared and the sinking sun bid us farewell in the most glorious of ways. I shared this moment with my friend Marc Adamus – someone I have a lot of respect for. You can view his version here.

Radiance
Greeting the oceans edge, lush fern forest like this stretches the majority of Fiordlands coast. During the morning and evening, the sun would make its way through the canopy, scattering gold across the greenery in this particular location. Listening to the oceans waves gently arrive onshore, we spent the night here with wild deer walking about our tents.

Chosen
The day prior to this, a fierce storm arrived and obliterated the majority of the lupin scattered around the lakes edge. I went for a walk at dawn and was pleased to find this small patch undisturbed, standing tall as they reached for the light

Amphitheatre of the fallen
Living in Fiordland has granted me the opportunity to pursue adverse and powerful weather events, such as this particular day when over a foot of rain fell in the valleys and fiords – half of Sydneys annual rainfall in one day. The overwhelming sight of the waterfalls in the Cleddau Valley truly moved me to the core, with the sight and sound of hundreds of waterfalls roaring in every direction, rivalled only by the thunderous river that became a junction for all. I felt so small, so humbled and privileged to be in the presence of such beauty and power. I was in the Cleddau River for this shot, in the pouring rain and after a solid half hour of battling the conditions, I managed to get a usable frame.

Aspire
It was mid-winter and I was staying in a private chalet, high up in the alpine wilderness of within the National Park. With no cloud in sight, upon arriving here I was thrilled to discover that the nights crescent moon would later fall behind the majestic Mount Aspiring. I was with my wife and kids who were safely warm in bed. Around midnight, I went outside, with the silence almost as memorable as watching the moon descend to the ridge, bringing darkness to the rest of the landscape. The camera was able to reveal the entire moon, with the glow of the crescent quarter being brightest.

Always hope
Crepuscular rays are a common sight in Fiordland, where steep vertical walls of granite fall dramatically to meet the surface of the sea. Watching this light dance across George Sound was one of the highlights of the year for me. A gentle reminder of how small we are in this grand existence.

As Darkness Becomes Light
In the heart of Fiordland, morning light is cast upon dense cloud high above Lake Manapouri. I’ve had the pleasure of camping in these remote areas over the years, experiences that have impacted me deeply and will continue to fuel my love for capturing the wilderness of New Zealand.
