Higher Places
Above darkness and into the fleeting light.

Beyond The Ether
Fresh snow and one of the most spectacular light shows I’ve beheld, as the sun set and ignited the clearing storm cloud. Seeing all the elements aligning I knew something special was on the way, so I made the last minute decision to take to the sky for this one. Taking my family with me, it was truly a special moment to share.

Grateful
The best moments are unplanned, unexpected and simply come to demand your attention above all else. After hiking uphill through the dark and snow, this scene materialised and holds a special place in my heart and mind. I’m grateful for it all.

Glorify
The New Zealand alpine environment in all its glory. Shortly afterwards, we gathered around the camp fire before sleeping under the stars.

Isles Of Gold
A scene which typifies Fiordland, with its forested mountains and numerous islands. There’s a special window in the golden hour when the light paints the trees and creates various contours, giving depth and shape to the mountains. A dusting of snow is always the final ingredient to top things off. My paradise.

Winterland
Fiordland takes on a whole new appearance after a fresh snow storm. The challenge is finding the weather window to get out and experience it. On this morning, everything came together in a spectacular symphony.

Revival
The final family of trees, which stop growing around 1000m elevation. At this height, the elements are relentless, causing the beech trees to become stunted and contorted. One of my favourite times to capture these creatures is when they’re snow covered. This morning was a special one, with fresh snow and gentle light complimenting the scene.

The Great Beyond
An imposing sky brings darkness to the land, as the sun sinks toward the horizon.
Fiordland, New Zealand (2024)
Still
The small, delicate leaves of the beech tree really struggle to hold the weight of fresh snow, especially once the sun rises. That said, it is one of the most beautiful sights seeing Fiordland draped in fresh powder down below the tree line. These types of mornings don’t present themself easily, making it even more memorable to witness.

A special sight as the light of dawn brushes the tallest of peaks, bringing a gentle warmth to the great snow covered land.

Rouge
A beautiful sunset begins to bloom, above a snow covered wild landscape quintessential to this part of the world.
Fiordland, New Zealand (2024)
Delicate
The delicate beech trees of Fiordland can’t hold snow for long, so capturing a scene like this is something I consider a real privilege.

The Awakening
The snow covered winter landscape awakens in the warmth of dawn.

Higher Level Of Majesty
I really look forward to the first snow of the season, which often falls in autumn. It never fails to leave an impression, after months of viewing the bare peaks, a fresh coating of snow completely transforms the scene and elevates it to an even higher level majesty.

Winter Trees
At the top of the tree line in the Fiordland mountains, where these ancient beech are exposed to the relentless elements. Here, morning light and fresh snow created a fairytale scene.

Adorned
A late season snow storm absolutely transformed the entire landscape, high up in the mountains. The snow was like porcelain and light soft and gentle as it painted the snow laden clouds. You can see the whole adventure on my Youtube channel here.

Icy Embrace
The ferocity of winter, plastering the high forests in a layer of snow and ice.

Porcelain
It’s a special sight to behold, seeing the lush rainforest and beech trees covered in fresh snow. The leaves of the silver beech aren’t much larger than your fingernail, so only a thin coat of snow can be held by these mossy creatures. The slightest increase in temperatures will soon see the snow disappear, usually before midday. It’s quite common for these old trees to fall down after decent snow fall, due to the shallow root system and frailty of the damp trunks.
