Anticipation
After spending several hours boating and hiking around various locations on the lake, I noticed the storm passing and an opening on the western horizon. After scouting around, I managed to park up for this special vista as I watched the show unfold. You can see how it came together in this video on my Youtube channel.

In The Shadows
I often take my boat out into Fiordland, parking up on shorelines and following creeks and streams, wandering through the dense forest as I search and anticipate discoveries such as this. See the video on my Youtube channel.

Homeward
Looking southward down Lake Te Anau as the sky was lit ablaze in a spectacular array of crimson and violet. Shortly after we made our way across the old glacial moraine, back to camp after a long, rewarding day of hiking up from the lake below. You can see how this image was made, in this video on my Youtube channel.

The Roman Arch
The ‘Roman Arch’ located in the Fiordland wilderness, overlooking lake Te Anau. This unique landmark was first discovered by early explorer Thomas Mackenzie and has since fallen into obscurity. My friend Dave and I hiked and camped out to capture this unusual monument and were gifted a phenomenal sunset. You can view the whole story and process on my Youtube channel.

Hope At Last
Alone on the waters, amidst the mountains pursuing light. I am content.

Wait In Wonder
A rewarding morning I shared with my workshop clients, as this rainbow emerged over this lone Kōwhai tree. A huge part of my job involves reading the sky and anticipating light, so this wasn’t luck but instead a game of patience. We waited in the wind and rain for the sun to finally reach the rain cloud beyond, rewarding us with this spectacular show. I’m grateful to behold and capture such moments.

Where We Wander
An enjoyable morning spent boating into the wilderness, then hiking and wading to follow this beautiful stream with my son. You can check out the vlog over on my Youtube channel.

The Unseen
In the wild places of Fiordland, innumerable falls of pristine beauty course through the hidden depths of mountain valleys. This is one such waterfall we discovered after boating and wading a creek into the vibrant greens of narrow gorge.

North To South
A rare perspective of Lake Te Anau in it’s entire length from north to south. The largest lake in the South Island. A place I’m so grateful to call home.

Isles Of Gold
A scene which typifies Fiordland, with its forested mountains and numerous islands. There’s a special window in the golden hour when the light paints the trees and creates various contours, giving depth and shape to the mountains. A dusting of snow is always the final ingredient to top things off. My paradise.

The Light We Seek
On a grey morning I took my boat across the lake and took to the hills, in order to ascend to where the light touched the cloud. After a few kms hiking, I found myself immersed in the beautiful transition where sun pierced the foggy veil.

Unforgettable
Fresh snow and one of the most spectacular light shows I’ve beheld, as the sun set and ignited the clearing storm cloud. Seeing all the elements aligning I knew something special was on the way, so I made the last minute decision to take to the sky for this one. Taking my family with me, it was truly a special moment to share.

Mercy
The setting sun filtering through the lush forest canopy. Shortly after I just had to put the camera down and simply sit, look and listen to what I was privileged to witness, on many occasions. I’m truly thankful for this.

Quiet Beauty
I really love these crips autumn days, when the light gets softer, the days are shorter and the air is fresh. The waters were calm on the lake, as I admired the light dancing across the face of the mountains. You can see the making of this on my Youtube channel.

Emerald Fall
This waterfall is unnamed. It’s one of thousands which are hidden from view, tucked away in mountainous valleys, gorges and dense forests. After boating and then hiking into dark confines of Fiordland, I’m confident very few, if any at all have even stood here. This is the most enjoyable part of photography for me, the exploration and surprises that await. It doesn’t always work out but when it does, it’s hard to beat. Green is my favourite colour and the water here had such a beautiful shade to it. Emerald Fall seems like a fitting title.

The Glory Of It All
I really don’t have many words to accompany this piece. It was a beautiful moment, so sublime in the crisp evening light beneath a crescent moon. I couldn’t take my eyes away, it demanded my full attention.

Natures Show
Landscape photographers are always watching the sky. Light is everything and cloud plays a vital role in backing, revealing and catching light. Sunsets like these are relatively rare but can be forecasted in advance and it’s quite the elation when the high cloud eventually ignites. It’s spectacular shows like this which seems to turn everyone into a photographer, with most people talking about it days after. I have many great memories of witnessing such skies. You can view the making of this one over on my Youtube channel.

Distant Shores
An evening on the lake, just me and my boat, exploring the lovely islands and mountain views which grace this part of the world. The Murchison mountains are home to the endangered Takahe bird, and these peaks overlook us in Te Anau. This image is an ode to the calm evenings of golden light we enjoy here.
